Parental red flags for abuse/neglect most likely to be encountered by the mental health professional include the following:

  • Parent is unable to describe positive characteristics of child
  • Parent berates, humiliates, or belittles child
  • Parent turns to child to have his/her own needs met
  • Parent is indifferent to child
